Custom Commands (also called custom skills) are reusable instructions you write once and then hand to Traci, the in-app AI assistant, with a single pick. Each command bundles a name, an optional description, and a block of instructions. When you run a command in chat, those instructions are added to Traci’s context for that message, so you don’t have to retype the same guidance (“focus on tax implications”, “draft this as a board update”, and so on) every time.
Two commands ship built in — note-taker (turn raw meeting or call notes into the right action on your portfolio) and deal-ingester (turn a pitch deck, forwarded text, or voice memo into a new pipeline deal). You can add your own alongside them.
Who can use Custom Commands#
Running a command in chat is available to everyone using the portfolio, on both the web app and the Trac mobile app.
Creating, editing, and deleting commands happens on the web app. There are two ways to do it there, and both are web-only today:
- The Custom Commands configuration tab, where you fill in the form yourself. The tab exists only on the web app.
- Asking Traci to draft the change for you in chat (see Ask Traci to manage a command). Traci answers with an approval card you have to accept before anything is saved, and that card is shown only in Traci’s web chat.
Set your commands up on the web; they then show up in the slash picker on web and mobile alike. Each command is either:
- Shared with the portfolio — visible to everyone using the portfolio, or
- Private — visible only to the person who created it.
You choose which when you create the command (see Create a command).
Run a command in chat#
Custom Commands are used from Traci’s chat, not from a menu:
- Open Traci. On the web app, click the Ask Traci launcher pinned to the bottom-right of the screen; Traci opens as a panel docked to the right edge that shifts the page content over to make room (use the expand icon in its header if you’d rather work in the full-screen canvas). In the Trac mobile app, tap the Traci tab — the round bubble beside the tab bar at the bottom of the screen.
- In the message box, type
/. A picker appears listing the commands available to you — the built-in ones plus any you or your portfolio have added. - Keep typing to filter the list by name (for example,
/taxnarrows to commands whose name contains “tax”). - Pick a command. Its instructions are attached to the message you send, so Traci follows that guidance for this turn.
The picker shows each command’s name and, when set, its description, so you can tell commands apart at a glance. If no commands match what you’ve typed, the picker shows “No commands available”.
Get to the Custom Commands tab#
To manage your commands (web app only):
- Open Configurations.
- Choose the Custom Commands tab.
You’ll see the list of commands available in the portfolio. Each row shows the command’s name and its description (or “Custom agent instructions” when no description is set). The header has a search box — type to narrow the list by name or description — and a plus (+) button to add a new command. If there are no commands yet, the list shows “No custom commands yet” with a prompt to add one.
Private commands belonging to other people don’t appear in your list; you only see shared commands and your own private ones.
Create a command#
From the Custom Commands tab, tap the plus (+) button to open the command form. A command has these fields:
- Name (required) — how the command appears in the list and in the slash picker. Give it something you’ll recognize, like “Tax Review Assistant”.
- Description — optional short text shown beneath the name in the slash picker to remind you what the command does.
- Instructions (required) — the guidance Traci follows when you run the command. Be specific about the focus and the format you want; this is the heart of the command. For example: “Review the selected holdings for tax-loss harvesting opportunities and summarize them as a bulleted list.”
- Private (only visible to you) — a toggle. When on, the command is private to you. When off, it’s shared with everyone using the portfolio. New commands default to Private.
Both Name and Instructions are required — Trac won’t save a command that is missing either. Tap Save. The command is saved in the background and the form closes; your new command shows up in the list and in the slash picker.
Ask Traci to manage a command#
You don’t have to fill the form in yourself. In Traci’s chat on the web app, describe the command you want in plain language and let Traci draft it — for example, “make me a command that reviews my holdings for tax-loss harvesting opportunities and summarizes them as bullets”. Traci can also change an existing command (“add a note about wash sales to my Tax Review Assistant”) or delete one you no longer use.
This is most useful for the Instructions text, which is the hard part of authoring a command: say what you want the command to do, let Traci write the wording, and fine-tune it in the Custom Commands tab afterwards.
Traci never saves the command on its own. It replies with an approval card (“Custom commands: 1 change”) that spells out what it is about to create, update, or delete and whether that command is private or shared, with Approve and Cancel buttons. The command is written only once you approve; cancel and nothing changes. This is the same review step Traci uses for every other change it proposes.
Worth knowing:
- Traci only sees the commands you see — shared commands plus your own private ones. Other people’s private commands are invisible to it, so it can’t rename or delete them.
- Say so if you want it private. A command Traci creates is shared with the portfolio unless you ask for a private one — the opposite of the form, where new commands default to Private. The approval card states the visibility, so check it before approving.
- Changing an existing command’s visibility is a form job. Traci keeps a command’s current visibility when it updates one; use the Private toggle in the Custom Commands tab to switch a command between private and shared.
- Approve on the web. The approval card appears in Traci’s web chat. You can run commands from the Trac mobile app, but a create, edit, or delete request has to be approved on the web.
Edit or delete a command#
From the Custom Commands list, tap a command to reopen the form with its current settings:
- Edit — change the name, description, instructions, or the Private toggle, then tap Save. The form also shows a read-only Command ID for the command you’re editing; you don’t need to set or change it.
- Delete — use the trash icon in the form header to remove the command, then confirm on the Are you sure? prompt. Once deleted, it no longer appears in the list or the slash picker.
How commands relate to your data#
A custom command only changes how you instruct Traci — it doesn’t add or change portfolio data on its own. Whatever Traci does in response (drafting an update, logging a transaction, creating a deal, and so on) still goes through the same flows and approvals as any other chat request.
Authoring a command is a different thing from running one. Running a command changes nothing by itself. Asking Traci to create, edit, or delete a command does change stored configuration, which is why it goes through the approval card described in Ask Traci to manage a command — an approved configuration change like any other. See Adding Your Data for how data gets into your portfolio, and the rest of this section for the actions Traci can help you take.
