Search is the fastest way to find a specific holding, owner, tag, or activity when you already know what you’re after. You reach it from the Search tab (the magnifying glass) in the main navigation bar.
Search is the text-based counterpart to the Navigator: use the Navigator when you want to browse the structure of your portfolio, and Search when you have a name (or part of one) in mind. The full spreadsheet-style data grid behind your portfolio is the Explorer.
The two search modes#
The search box has a Tx Search button next to it that toggles between two modes:
- General search (the default) — finds holdings, owners, and tags by name. This is what you get as soon as you start typing.
- Tx Search — finds your activities instead — the money activity recorded on your holdings. Tap Tx Search to turn it on; the button highlights while it’s active, and the placeholder changes to Search transactions.
Clearing the search box turns Tx Search back off and returns you to the quick lists (below).
Find holdings, owners, and tags#
With General search, start typing in the search box. Results appear after a brief pause (Trac waits about a third of a second after you stop typing so it isn’t searching on every keystroke). Three kinds of result can come back:
- Holdings — your portfolio items (assets, liabilities, cash accounts, and so on). Tap one to open its detail page.
- Owners — the people, trusts, LLCs, or accounts that hold your items. Tapping an owner opens a portfolio view filtered to that owner’s holdings.
- Tags — Tapping a tag opens a portfolio view filtered to everything with that tag.
If nothing matches, Search shows No results found.
Showing closed holdings#
Closed holdings are hidden by default so your results stay focused on what’s active. When your search also matches closed items, a Show Closed (N) button appears at the bottom of the results:
- Tap Show Closed to switch the list to your closed matches.
- The button then reads Show Open to switch back.
If the only things matching your search are closed, Trac shows them automatically so you’re never left staring at an empty result.
Tx Search: find an activity#
Turn on Tx Search to search your activity history instead of your holdings. This mode searches your activities — the buys, sells, dividends, transfers, and other money movements recorded on your holdings — and lists the matches most recent first.
You can act on a result without leaving Search:
- Use the result’s header menu to Edit it. Editing opens the activity editor in a pop-up; saving updates your search results in place.
- Use the same menu to Delete it. Trac asks you to confirm first, because a delete can’t be undone.
Quick lists#
When the search box is empty, the Search tab shows quick lists — curated shortcuts to the holdings you reach for most. Switch between them with the tabs just under the search box. Search opens on Favorites by default.
- Favorites — the holdings and owners you’ve marked as favorites.
- Recently Viewed — items you’ve opened recently, most recent first.
- Recent Movers — items whose value has changed the most lately.
- Recently Added — items you’ve added to your portfolio most recently.
Tap any item in a quick list to open it, the same as a search result.
Reordering favorites#
Favorites is the only quick list you can reorder, and your order sticks:
- On the web, drag a favorite by its handle to move it.
- On a phone or tablet, press and hold a favorite, then drag it.
The new order is saved as you drop each item, so your Favorites list looks the same the next time you open Trac. If you haven’t favorited anything yet, the tab shows No favorites found.
Tips#
- Deep linking. Your search text is kept in the page address (as
?q=), so you can bookmark or share a link that opens Search already filled in. On the web, the search box is focused automatically when the page opens, so you can start typing right away. - Switching modes clears the closed toggle. Clearing the search box resets both Tx Search and the Show Closed setting, so each new search starts clean.
